Mashed Potatoes
Ingredients
- 3 large russet potatoes, peeled and cut in half lengthwise
- ½ C whole milk or Half-and-Half
- ¼ C butter
- Salt and ground black pepper to taste
Directions
- Prep: Place potatoes in a large pot, cover with salted water, and bring to a boil.
- Cook: Reduce heat, cover, and simmer until tender, about 20-25 minutes.
- Dry: Drain potatoes and return to the pot. Heat briefly over high heat to remove excess moisture, then turn off heat.
- Mash: Mash potatoes, then add milk and butter. Continue mashing until smooth and fluffy.
- Season: Whisk in salt and black pepper until evenly combined.
Chef's Notes
- Pro Tip: Reserve 1-2 cups of the cooking liquid to help create a smooth, silky texture.
- Add 6-8 peeled garlic cloves to the pot before boiling and mash with the potatoes for garlic mashed potatoes.
- Use a sturdy potato masher or a ricer for best texture.
